MARTIAL ARTS
I have been involved with Martial Arts since 1999. In that time, I have earned three black belts in different styles (I currently hold a third degree in American Kenpo Karate), taught thousands of kids’ classes (and a few adults’ classes too), met some amazing human beings, gotten some spectacular bruises, and witnessed incredible feats of physical prowess as well as stunning acts of sportsmanship. I’ve heard tons of stories (some of which I can’t share), and generally made a nuisance of myself at every opportunity.
As a martial artist, I’m nothing to write home about. I’m not a national champion, my kicks aren’t spectacular, I can’t fold myself into a pretzel. What I have done is shown up. Over and over. Not every day, but consistently, over time. It adds up. And having started life as the “girl picked last for kickball/dodgeball/softball/volleyball/you-name-it-ball,” I am a shining example of “well, if she can do it, anyone can.”
I am creating this space as a place to share some thoughts and projects about what I have learned beyond the techniques. You can read some of my writings below or visit my Martial Artists Map. If you see something that inspires you, you can comment on a post or drop me a line in the contact form below.
Four Girls
I was teaching the Saturday morning Kenpo class - no, not the 7:30 am advanced Black Belt class - the 10:00 am one - the one with the wee beasties, the littles, the younglings. Four little girls showed up that day, a couple of 7-year-olds, and a pair of sisters...
It’s the Journey
This March, in 2019, marks 20 years since I first stepped onto a dojo mat as a student. My first thought upon making this realization is, “I really should be better at this by now.” My second is, “Who the hell could've predicted that?” To be fair to myself, I had...
The Other Door
Not too long ago, a yoga studio opened up next door to the martial arts studio where I train. The two businesses share a parking lot in the back, and both have a rear entrance, along a narrow path about five feet below the level of the parking lot. One day, I...
Claiming Space
“Unless I’m crying or bleeding, you don’t need to apologize.” I found myself uttering this odd phrase the other day during Kenpo class when I was practicing techniques with a girl who was about 12 years old (and taller than me). Our dojo in Granada Hills is still...
Lying to Children
We are all liars. Every single one of us. Fibbers. Fakers. Phonies. Frauds. Pretenders. Deceivers. We tell lies to children. Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy -- that’s just the beginning. Later we get creative. My aunt Sylvia told my eight-year-old...
Fight like a Girl
I took my first martial arts class in 1999. Since then I have earned black belts in two different styles, and am currently studying Kenpo Karate. In my previous style, I was fortunate to have taught kids for almost seven years, and I am sure I gained more wisdom...
